Toolkit Details
The Standards Toolkit has been developed as a series
of publications for teachers and other educators to
use in implementing the Hawaii Content and Performance
Standards on the classroom level.
Publications in the Toolkit serve as resources that
enable teachers and others who provide instructional
and support services to students to focus on improving
the quality of teaching, thereby facilitating increased
student achievement of the Hawaii Content and Performance
Standards. Four HCPS resource documents are part of
the toolkits:
1. Curriculum Frameworks and Program Area Guides
Curriculum frameworks for each 10 HCPS content areas
are documents that suggest the best thinking about the
knowledge, skills, and processes students should know
and understand about a particular content area. The
frameworks present a general description of the content
area, discuss the rationale for and organization of
the system of standards in that content area, describe
how the standards were developed and organized, and
presents examples of classroom assessment, curriculum,
and instruction within that content area. The Curriculum
frameworks provide the rationale or statements of the
values, principles, research, and assumptions which
help to guide decision making and the designing of curricular
and instructional programs for each content area.
Program Area Guides will provide coherent, congruent,
and detailed overviews of various program areas. The
Guides will describe the program’s rationale and
legal authority, its scope and goals, a summary of research
and issues. The Guide will also include statements of
how the program area relates to and fits in with other
content areas and the state content and performance
standards. Program Area Guides will include Character
Education, Environmental Education, Gifted and Talented
Education, Hawaiian Language Immersion, Hawaiian Studies,
Service Learning, Student Activities, and Migrant Education.
2. Grade Level Performance Indicator Progression
The Grade Level Performance Indicators were developed
to further refine the HCPS benchmarks by providing statements
for each grade that describe student work and performance
that result from quality instruction. The contents of
the Grade Level Performance Indicator Progression are
organized by strands and content standards and display
the progression of student performance from kindergarten
through grade 12. For each benchmark, one or two grade
level performance indicators are provided.
3. Content Area Scope and Sequence
The Content Area Scope and Sequence is a set of topics
based on the grade level performance indicators.
4. Instructional Guides
The Instructional Guides for each of the 10 HCPS content
areas are comprised of three elements that link directly
to the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS)
and benchmarks:
(1) Grade Level Performance Indicators (GLPIs)
(2) Sample classroom assessment tasks
(3) Sample classroom instructional strategies
In the Instructional Guide, one or two grade level
performance indicators are provided for each benchmark.
Following each performance indicator is the sample performance
assessment task and sample instructional strategy.
