| Q: |
Can I play copyrighted music for Mayday? |
| A: |
Copyrighted legislation is intended to protect the creative individuals who produce intellectual and artistic works and is intended to protect their financial interests by prohibiting others from copying or misusing their works. Therefore if copyrighted music is to be used for Mayday, schools should get consent from the copyright owners. Copyright owners are often happy to approve the use of copyrighted works for educational purposes. It is important that you apply in advance to give the copyright holder time to review and approve the proposed use. |

| Q: |
What is TeleSchool? |
| A: |
The Teleschool Branch is part of the Hawaii Department of Education’s Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support (OCISS). It is primarily responsible for the acquisition and distribution of educational video programs, creation of video programs in support of the Department of Education, duplication of videotapes, management of the DOE statewide video conferencing system, and transmission of educational video programming over cable and broadcast channels. People often confuse Teleschool with other departments and agencies such as Olelo and Hawaii Public Television because the Hawaii Department of Education does not have its own TV channel to transmit over. Teleschool works in partnership with other organizations such as Olelo the Corporation for Community Television, Akaku, Na Leo O Hawaii, Hoike, UH at Manoa and HPTV, Hawaii Public Television to transmit DOE video programming. Many times people watching DOE programming on one of these channels believe that Teleschool is part of the organization that operates the channel, when in actuality Teleschool is working in partnership with the organization but is not part of the organization. Teleschool also schedules many types of DOE related programming and sometimes people confuse the program being viewed as that of Teleschool which may or may not be the case. Teleschool creates a variety of original programming such as KidScience, EARTH Geography, and Music Factory, but Teleschool also creates programming for other departments such as E-School, Special Education, and School Safety. Teleschool is comprised of 3 sections, Media Library, Video Access and Television Services, although sometimes each section may be identified independently all are part of the Teleschool Branch. |

|
| Q: |
Is Teleschool part of or the same as the Olelo organization? |
| A: |
The Teleschool Branch is not part of Olelo. The Teleschool Branch is part of the Hawaii Department of Education’s Curriculum, Instruction and School Support (OCISS). Teleschool does work closely with Olelo and so it may appear as though Teleschool and Olelo are the same. Because the DOE does not have its own broadcast channel to transmit on, it must partner with other agencies to transmit its programming which sometimes lead people to believe that Teleschool is part of the agency transmitting the programming. Teleschool transmits DOE video programming over Olelo’s channel 56 on Oahu and other public access stations across the state. Teleschool is located in the Olelo building but is not part of the Olelo organization. |

|
| Q: |
What is Olelo? |
| A: |
Olelo is a non-profit organization that promotes and supports community access television on the island of Oahu. Olelo maintains 6 cable channels, 49, 52, 53, 54, 55, and 56. DOE uses 1 of the 6 channels, channel 56 Monday – Friday 8am – 10pm and Saturday 8am-12pm to transmit programming for the school system. |

|
| Q: |
Is Teleschool part of Hawaii Public Television (KHET)? |
| A: |
Teleschool is not part of Hawaii Public Television. The Teleschool Branch is part of the Hawaii Department of Education’s Curriculum, Instruction and School Support (OCISS). Because the DOE does not have its own broadcast channel to transmit over it must partner with other agencies to transmit programming which sometimes lead people to believe that Teleschool is part of the agency transmitting the programming. Teleschool works closely with HPTV but is not the same. HPTV is a non-profit organization. Teleschool broadcasts some programming over HPTV’s KHET channel and uses its studio for some of the production work. Prior to cable TV in Hawaii all of the DOE’s programming was transmitted over HPTV’s KHET. |
