Arakaki v. Lingle
A multi-ethnic group of Hawai'i residents filed suit in federal court on March 4, 2002 challenging the constitutionality of both the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act. Judge Susan Oki Mollway dismissed plaintiffs Sandra Puanani Burgess, Donna Malia Scaff, and Evelyn C. Arakaki on January 13, 2004 and on January 14 dismissed the entire suit.

Rice v. Cayetano
In 1996, Harold “Freddy” Rices, filed suit to open voting for Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustees by all voters, not just native Hawaiians, as mandated in the 1978 constitutional amendment creating OHA.
